REGISTER to VOTE or PREREGISTER

The North
Carolina General Assembly recently
enacted S.L. 2009-541 which allows for
the preregistration of citizens between
the ages of 16 and 17 years of age.
Effective, January 1, 2010, "a person
who is at least 16 years of age but will
not be 18 years of
age by the date of
the next election and who is otherwise
qualified to register may preregister to
vote and shall be automatically
registered upon reaching the age of
eligibility."

-You must be
a US citizen by birth or naturalization.
-Be at least
18 years old or will be at the time of
the next general election, or you are at
least 16 years old and understand that you must be at least 18 years old
on election
day of the general election in order to vote.
-A resident
of North Carolina and this county for 30
days before the election.
-If you have
been convicted of a felony you must have
completed your sentence, including
probation and parole.
PARTY PRIMARIES AND 17 YEAR OLDS
A person who is 17 years old can vote in
a party primary, if she/he will be 18
years old by the date of the next
general election.
Although 17
year olds may vote in the party primary,
they may not vote on any constitutional
issues, bonds, or referenda on the
ballot.
POLITICAL PARTY AFFILIATION
There are
three officially recognized political
parties in North Carolina:
(1) Democratic (2)
Republican (3)
Libertarian
IF
YOU REGISTER UNAFFILIATED
(a) During a
partisan primary election, an
unaffiliated voter may vote on
nonpartisan races, bond and amendment
issues and by request may vote in either
the Democratic Primary or the Republican
Primary. If a second primary is called,
an unaffiliated voter must vote the same
party as he/she did in the primary.
(b) In a
general election, you may vote your
preference on candidates and issues
regardless of your affiliation.
IDENTIFICATION REQUIREMENT
If he/she has never registered
to vote in the county in which he/she is
registering and does not have a driver’s
license or social security number, one
of the following needs to be submitted:
A copy of
current and valid photo identification,
OR a copy of a current utility bill,
bank statement, government check,
paycheck or other government document
that shows name and address.
If you do not
submit identification information at the
time you register, you will need to show
ID at the time you vote.
DEADLINE
The deadline to register to vote in this
State is 25 days before the day of the
election. Forms that are received by the
county board of elections office or
postmarked by the deadline are accepted
as valid applications for the upcoming
election.
Individuals
who miss the registration deadline, if
qualified, may register in person and
then vote at a one-stop voting site in
the person’s county of residence during
the one-stop absentee voting period,
which begins the third Thursday before
an election and goes through the last
Saturday before an election.
